Students joining the college
to study GCSEs do so for a variety of reasons, the most common being
that parents feel that their son or daughter will benefit from small,
supportive and hard working environments. Small classes help to
ensure that tutors are able to focus on the needs of each student.
Some students have been 'lost' and overwhelmed by large classes
in previous schools, if not disaffected by education altogether.
Often, they find a new enjoyment and confidence in their ability
to express themselves and learn, after a very short time at Wentworth.
As the college is relatively small, there are very few unfamiliar
faces and they soon feel at home.
Courses may be taken over one or two years, depending on age, circumstances and ability of each student.
One & Two Year Courses
Our integrated one and two year programmes allow the students to study six or more subjects, including English, Mathematics, Citizenship and least one science subject.
One year courses are for those students who wish to transfer from other schools at the end of year 10 or for those who wish to take additional subjects or improve existing grades.
Two year courses give students the opportunity to develop key study skills and the time to discover where their aptitudes and potential lie, before finalising their subject choices.
Retake Courses
Short courses in Maths and English are available during the Autumn Term for students wishing to retake these examinations in November.
All courses are modelled to the specific needs of students, with the emphasis on examination technique and effective learning methods.
Study Skills
All students will have one period of study skills each week during the Autumn and Spring Terms. During these sessions they will learn to organise their work effectively, how to take notes, revise and tackle examination papers. Attendance is compulsory.
Student Welfare
Students have a full daily programme of lessons and study sessions which also includes morning and afternoon registration.
The progress of each student is monitored by a personal tutor who will always be on hand to offer guidance and encouragement when dealing with either academic or personal matters.
The personal tutor is in constant touch with all subject teachers and is always happy to talk to parents should the need arise.
Students are supervised closely and benefit from a regulated educational environment built on an informal atmosphere.
