Art & Design
In our expanding Art department we have the facilities and teaching expertise to provide
students with a wide range of subject options which include painting, printmaking,
graphic design, sculpture and textiles.
A recent addition at the college has been the introduction of Textiles
A-level which can be taken as part
of the Art A-level or separately as
a qualification in its own right.
Media & Film Studies
Media and Film Studies are now established subjects at the college. Both courses offer a
thorough preparation for the specialisation and personal research expected in
undergraduate courses, but also offer skills and insights into professional practice, which
will prove useful in any creative work.
The course itself offers a balanced range of practical production activities, personal
research and applied theoretical study. These are complemented by practical sessions and
presentations by visiting media practitioners.
Practical sessions are an integral part of the course and offer students Ôhands-on' training
in filming, production and desktop video editing.
English Literature
The Wentworth course offers a very broad introduction to literary study. The texts
present an amazing range of human experience, from Chaucer to Ulster in the 1980s.
Great emphasis is laid on developing an appreciation of the social and cultural context
lying behind set works. Students' critical faculties are also stimulated by regular theatre
visits.
The study of English lays firm foundations for further study as it involves constructing
and evidencing arguments and requires precise self-expression.
History & Religious Studies
History A-level is a highly esteemed course that is universally respected. It aims to
investigate and analyse past events, with the intention of gaining an insight and
understanding of how they unfold over time. Students of History at Wentworth find the
course highly interesting, as it has a particular emphasis on the events of the Twentieth
Century. The course has direct relevance to contemporary world issues, a deeper
understanding of which is of benefit to us all.
Religious Studies is a well-established subject at Wentworth which students find
stimulating and exciting. It appeals both to religious students and to sceptics wanting to
know more about this strange worldwide phenomenon. It will enable you to develop
analytical skills and think critically about the success or failure of arguments. It will also
prepare students well for many Higher Education degree courses in the humanities and
social sciences.
Languages
In an age of increasing European integration,
it has never been more important for us to have access to and appreciation of our
continental neighbours. Language study at A level offers the satisfaction and discipline of
learning and applying grammatical rules as means to an
end, an introduction to the society, history
and culture of the target language country.
In addition to developing basic comprehension and self-expression, students will also
have
the opportunity to undertake coursework assignments covering a wide range of historical,
political or literary topics. These often involve creative overlap with other A level
subjects. Visits to Paris are arranged on a regular basis.
